About

I’m Robert Alvarez and I have had the true pleasure of being “on the air” in one way or another for over 30 years across the state of Texas. My adventures behind the mic began in the 90’s at Odessa College’s KOCV radio station announcing the weather on NPR. From there, I migrated to the first full time Tejano FM station in the Midland/Odessa area – KMRK Tejano 96! Moving up the ladder, I decided to leave for TexMex 1070 and take over the role as program director and morning show host as well as picking up a little gig on television for the NBC affiliate NewsWest 9 as host of the Tejano entertainment show Colores del Barrio for 7 years.

As often happens… life happened… and I wanted to get out of the Permian Basin are and move into management. The opportunity presented itself at KRTU in San Antonio and then I decided to leave the media world for over a decade and do only commercial production from my home studio to escape the stress of daily radio.

In 2006, I relocated to the mountains of Texas and “destressed” from the hustle and bustle of city life but radio still found me in the tiny town of Fort Davis, Texas. I was asked to call ply-by-play for a few 6-man football games and the radio bug took hold again! Martin and PJ  Benovich, new owners of KALP 92.7FM in Alpine, asked if he would like to do a weekly spanish show. My reply was “only if I can do whatever I want – this is my show with no constraints”. They agreed 100% and TejanoSundays was born!

For the past 8 years, the Tejano Sundays Radio Show has broadcast from 3p-6p on KALP 92.7FM and over the internet at BigBendRadio.com featuring only Tejano music from the past to the present. Si Dios Quiere, I’ll keep doing it until he calls me home.
